There was a buzz of excitement along the Passeig del Born last night in anticipation of the Christmas lights being switched on. A DJ filled the avenue with lively beats and then a choir took over with some emotive singing.
At 19.00 the lights came on, marking the beginning of the festive season in Mallorca. Twinkling fairy lights spiralled up every tree trunk and illuminated each branch. Garlands with huge hanging balls criss-crossed the street and a whole canopy of lights covered the Plaça del Rei Joan Carles I.
Balloon vendors were popular with the children, who flew at the chance of getting their own light show in the form of LED-decorated balloons. Some families stayed to enjoy a concert of Christmas tunes, others went in search of churros and hot chocolate!
